Both look fantastic and we’re looking forward to reviewing them soon. Read below for the full press release.

November 14, 2013 — For a half-century, the Fairchild 670 and 660 tube limiters have defined many of popular music’s most revered vocal and drum sounds, from Pink Floyd and the Beatles to classic Motown singles. Now, Universal Audio has fully captured Fairchild’s revered tube character with the Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection for the UAD Powered Plug-Ins platform and Apollo audio interfaces.

Steinberg have revealed an exciting and innovative new product – Cubase iC Air. iC Air enables gesture control over Cubase 7

“With the advent of various gesture recognition technologies we’ve been looking into possibilities to control Cubase in a novel way by using simple hand gestures as an alternative control alongside the conventional mouse and keyboard — and Cubase iC Air is our first achievement in this field of research,” says Shih Ming Law – the lead developer for iC Air. Certainly looks wickedly exciting and hugely innovative. We’re looking forward to ahem – getting our hands near it!

For the full press release read on:

Press Release: Freely available Cubase iC Air unleashes new level of control, freedom and flexibility within Cubase 7 and Cubase Artist 7 when interacting with Leap Motion Controller or Intel systems powered by Intel Perceptual Computing SDK

HAMBURG, Germany — November 18, 2013 — Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH today announced the release of Cubase iC Air, allowing users of Cubase 7 or Cubase Artist 7, together with Leap Motion Controller or Intel systems powered by the Intel Perceptual Computing SDK, to control Steinberg’s popular DAW intuitively by the command of gestures.

“With the advent of various gesture recognition technologies we’ve been looking into possibilities to control Cubase in a novel way by using simple hand gestures as an alternative control alongside the conventional mouse and keyboard — and Cubase iC Air is our first achievement in this field of research,” comments Shih Ming Law, key developer for Cubase iC Air.

Cubase iC Air embeds a control panel within Cubase 7 and Cubase Artist 7, giving visual feedback of the user’s hand gestures that are picked up by depth cameras from Leap Motion and Intel. Pre-programmed gestural commands allow the user to perform transport controls, such as start, stop, forward and rewind, to jump to the next or previous track, to audition through sections of audio and zoom in and out the arrangement.

By implementing a virtual version of Steinberg’s AI Knob, users are also able to control many other parameters of Cubase as well as VST 2.4 and VST 3 plug-ins through Cubase iC Air.

Intel global account manager Jean-Pierre Navarro says: “The great collaboration with Steinberg’s developer team helps get the most of the Intel platform and the Intel Perceptual Computing SDK. Cubase iC Air provides users with a new and exciting way of interaction. This is an entirely new way of experiencing music.”

Cubase iC Air is a software component that requires Cubase 7 or Cubase Artist 7 as host application and a Leap Motion Controller or depth camera run by the Intel Perceptual Computing SDK.

Cubase iC Air is a freely downloadable component, available from the Steinberg website.

Features at a glance

• Control Cubase 7 and Cubase Artist 7 with hand gestures through supported hardware
• Use pre-defined gesture commands for transport control, navigation and more
• Control virtually any parameter through Advanced Integration

Ableton Live 9.1 Officially Released

The 9.1 update for Ableton Live has now been officially released after being trialled in beta. The updated version now includes complete support for two windows on dual monitors

Live 9.1 also includes a brand new melodic step sequencer, which allows users to enter notes manually, or play them in, then edit each note in the sequence accurately – or via Push – You can also now edit automation with ease.

There are a raft of other changes as well – see below for the full list of updates

Download the 9.1 update for free with your Ableton account HERE

Ableton Live 9.1 Official Update Changes:

Improvements and feature changes
• Added dual monitor support.
• When exporting audio, sample-rate conversion is now done using the high-quality SoX Resampler Library, resulting in higher quality exports when rendering to a lower Hsample rate.
• Live now uses multiple CPU cores when exporting audio and the normalisation process is faster than before.
• When exporting audio files from Live with the option “Create Analysis File” enabled, Live will now save warp markers with the .asd file, so that information about the original tempo and tempo changes are correctly reused when re-importing the audio file into Live later on.
• The ‘Export Audio / Video’ export dialog has been improved.
- It shows the same options whether launched from Session or Arrangement View.
- Some of the export settings have been regrouped to provide a better overview.
- “All Tracks” has been renamed to “Individual Tracks” in the “Rendered Track” chooser.
- The export dialog now shows information about the source and target sample rate.
• The “Open Recent Sets” menu now has a “Clear List” and “Remove Unavailable Sets” option.
• The menu item “Close Live Set” has been renamed to “Close Window”. It will now close any secondary window that is open. If no secondary window is open, it does nothing.
• The audio buffer size is now restricted to power-of-two values. Windows users should note that not all ASIO drivers support this and may still allow to use non power-of-two values. This can lead to a higher CPU load and higher latencies. Ableton recommends to always use power-of-two buffer sizes, i.e. 64, 128, 256, 512,… samples.
• Optimised default presets for Auto Filter, EQ Eight, Saturator, Tension, Simpler, Sampler, Analog, Operator, Electric.|
• Added 10 new Simpler presets to the Core Library.
• Updated manuals, lessons, info texts and translations.
• Minor improvements for usage data reporting.
• When creating a new track by dragging an instrument to the clip/device drop area, Live would keep the last selected clip stand-by-selected. Now it moves the selection to the clip slot that matches the Session View’s crosshair.

Bugfixes
• The mouse and keyboard could sometimes become unresponsive after zooming, scrolling or tweaking parameters on OS X 10.9 “Mavericks”.
• Automatic updates could break an installation if the update process was interrupted.
• Automatic updates would not work when running Live in ReWire slave mode. Therefore, automatic updates are now turned off in this case.
• Live would not check if there’s enough free disk space available before applying an automatic update.
• Fixed a problem which could lead to a memory leak in the Ableton Index and Web Connector processes.
• Loading Live Sets and presets could take longer than necessary if the file contains references to missing samples.
• The metronome timing would be incorrect after reloading a Live Set with a different time signature than 4/4.
• Decreasing and then increasing the audio buffer size in the Audio preferences tab could cause permanent crackling on Mac OS X 10.7 or higher.
• Two crossfaded clips running in ‘Complex’ or ‘Complex Pro’ warp mode could cause crackles and dropouts if the samples were time-stretched.
• Negative sample offset modulation of the Beats warp mode would not work correctly and could lead to disk overloads.
• The Sampler device occasionally produced a red ‘D’ (harddisk warning) if the sample is played very fast (high note, low base note). The fix reduces the likelihood of such disk dropout warnings.
• Audio effects or racks with a high overall latency would not be rendered correctly. The beginning of the rendered file could contain a short period of the dry signal.
• Fixed a bug that could cause parts of a waveform to disappear when dragging a warp marker.
• Live would select clips slots when clicking and dragging in the empty area below the clips slots.
• Key presses were not correctly forwarded to Live from VST plug-in windows or the video window (PC only).
• Fixed a CPU performance problem which could occur with certain VST plug-ins.
• Fixed a bug which could prevent certain AU plug-in windows from closing in the 64-bit version.
• Live could crash when recording automation for VST or AU plug-ins on return tracks.
• Looping automation in Session View clips was not correctly disabled when touching an automated parameter with the mouse.
• MIDI sustain messages would be occasionally ignored when recording over an existing MIDI clip in the Arrangement View.
• Irregular audio output values from Max for Live devices (i.e. “Not a Number” signals) would break downstream signal processing in Live. Such signals are now automatically replaced with silence.
• Presets containing Max for Live devices from the User Library would sometimes not be shown in the browser’s “Max for Live” label.
• Max for Live API: The “length” property of a looped clip would reflect the distance from the clip start to clip end marker and not the length of the loop, as specified in the API documentation.
• Max for Live API: Live could return a “bad number” error message when observing the “clip_trigger_quantization” property.
• Live could crash when remapping a Max for Live device after using undo.
• Live could crash when adding a drum rack from the “Autobeat” pack.
• Mapping a MIDI message from a ReWire master application to one of Live’s parameters could crash the ReWire host and freeze Live.
• Live could crash when pressing CMD/CTRL + M or CMD/CTRL + K during startup.
• Kit-Core 808 Kick, Toms and Congas could produce unwanted clicks when tweaking the “Low/High Cut” macros.
• The “Shaperello Pad” preset could produce unwanted clicks when tweaking the “Erosion” macro.
• Removed redundant choke group in Kit-SessionDry.
• Fixed wrong notes in Scale preset “Minor Pentatonic Scale”.
• MIDI data routed from a track output to the Launchpad would be sent on the wrong MIDI channel.
• Fixed LED-update for Track On/Off button on Reloop KeyFadr/KeyPad controllers.

Changes for Push
• Updated firmware to version 1.13. Live will show a dialog box on startup if a new Push firmware is available. Detailed update instructions and a changelog are available in a separate Knowledge Base article.
• Added a Melodic Step Sequencer mode.
• You can now add parameter automation to the selected step in a step sequencer.
• Push’s display now indicates automated parameters, as well as overridden automation.
• Step Sequencer mode is now also available for Drum Racks that are nested inside Instrument Racks.
• Less force is required to set steps in the step sequencers and loops in the loop selector.
• Improved behavior and color scheme for the loop selector in step sequencers.
• Auto-follow mode is now disabled when creating new clips by setting the first step in the step sequencer.
• When navigating between different clips, Push now remembers which “page” of a step sequencer was selected in each clip and returns to it when reselecting a clip.
• When holding down a step in a step sequencer, you can edit the length of MIDI notes in steps (coarse) and in percent (fine). The length of the edited note is also reflected on the button matrix.
• You can delete all notes on the same pitch within the current loop by holding down the delete button and then pressing the respective pad. This works in Note mode and also for playable drum pads.
• The “Fixed Length” setting is now respected when creating a new clip by adding steps to an (empty) step sequencer.
• When enabling ‘Scales’ mode, you can use the first encoder to scroll through the available scales.
• Push’s display now shows a short message when using the Undo / Redo button.
• The second footswitch input now allows to control clip recording:  A single tap triggers Push’s record button. A double-tap triggers Push’s “New” button.
• Clips inside group tracks would not be indicated on the button grid when using Session mode.
• When creating a new clip while Push is in Session mode, any update to that clip’s color was not reflected on Push.
• The playhead could sometimes skip the first step when auto-follow was enabled.
• The playhead would sometimes be stuck for a short time or skip beats when changing the step sequencer’s resolution.
• If a clip’s start marker was set to a negative time, e.g. -2.1.1, it wasn’t possible to move the loop length into a negative time range.
• Audio or MIDI tracks (with their MIDI input set to something other than Push) would be disarmed when selecting Tracks via Push, regardless of the Exclusive Arm settings.
• Live could crash when overdubbing automation on a Return track using Push.
• Live could crash when remapping a Max for Live device whilst touching / releasing an encoder on Push.

ADAM Audio Subwoofer Sub 15 Released

ADAM have released the Sub 15 – a highly powerful subwoofer that extends the frequency range of main and and midfield monitors down to 20Hz.

The PWM amplifier has an efficiency factor of nearly 90% and has the power of 1000 Watts. For more detailed info read below…

The Sub15 is an extremely powerful subwoofer that is capable of extending the frequency range of main and midfield monitors down to 20Hz. The sturdy 15“ woofer is made of an exceptionally rigid aluminium membrane and is driven by two powerful magnets and a 100mm voice coil. With the power of 1000 Watts (RMS) the PWM amplifier has an efficiency factor of nearly 90%. With these performance features the Sub15 is very capable of handling critical musical passages with high and sudden bass peaks without showing signs of distortion or overheating. The downward firing bass port has been specially designed to cancel any kind of port noise by applying generous dimensioning and rounded edges.

In order to tweak the sound of the Sub15 to different room situations or individual taste we have implemented several controls as there is one for the volume (-60dB to +6dB) and one control for the crossover frequency (50 – 150Hz). The satellite speakers can be driven fullrange or high pass filtered at 85Hz by choice. In this way the Sub15 can be easily integrated in a Dolby surround setup. Furthermore unfavourable phase relationships between the satellites and the subwoofer particularly in the crossover frequency range can be dealt with the help of a phase reverse switch. The Sub15 also proves very flexible when it comes to connectivity: There are balanced (XLR) and also unbalanced (RCA) input / output connectors to be found on the rear of the subwoofer.

The Sub15 joins excellent transient behaviour with an impressive low frequency performance which makes music reproduction a very genuine experience. With a high and undistorted sound pressure output of 112dB maximum SPL in one meter the Sub15 makes the perfect subwoofer for mid-sized and larger control rooms.

Technical Data:

Basket Ø: 15“ (390mm) | Voice coil Ø: 4“ (100mm)| Amplifier power RMS/Music: 1000W/1200W max peak SPL in 1m: 112dB| Frequency response: 20-150Hz | Crossover frequencies: 50-150Hz

Songs for Soma is a compilation, charity album produced by long time MusicTech reader, Stuart Lynch. Following a trip to the Gambia to take part in project work for the Kaira Konko Charity earlier this year, Stuart has since been involved in allsorts of money raising schemes. He had the idea for the album after helping arrange a successful musical function which featured local bands raising almost £2000. Initially, the album was just going to feature the same local bands, but after a couple of hopeful tweets and messages, Stuart managed to secure tracks from Carol Decker of T’Pau and Huey Morgan (formerly of The Fun Lovin’ Criminals).

This latter track is previously unreleased. “I’m extremely grateful to Carol and Huey for allowing me to use their tracks at no cost. It certainly helps to raise the profile of the album, particularly when they both Tweet about it to their many thousands of followers!” In addition, the album is full of other tracks of all musical genres, very kindly donated by people from all over the world. “If I’ve learnt anything from putting this album together”, says Stuart “it’s that there is an unbelievable amount of music talent in bedrooms and home studios that really
deserves to be heard.”

Every single penny from the sale of the album will go towards the Kaira Konko Education Fund which helps buy uniforms and equipment to enable more children to go to school and get a decent education. Press Release: Native Instruments Introduces HALCYON SKY Expansion for MASCHINE 2.0

Berlin, December 18, 2013 – Native Instruments today released HALCYON SKY – a new MASCHINE Expansion delivering the downtempo rhythms, organic synths, and hazy atmospheres of contemporary ambient electronica. Designed exclusively for the MASCHINE 2.0 software, HALCYON SKY is the first MASCHINE expansion to feature exclusive presets for the PRISM synth – included in the MASCHINE 2.0 software update. HALCYON SKY is available now at the NI Online Shop for $49 / 49 € / ¥ 4,800.

HALCYON SKY’s 50 drum kits were created with a combination of sampled drums and new MASCHINE 2.0 Drum Synth presets. The samples were recorded exclusively for HALCYON SKY and contain a range of warm, saturated kicks, snares, and hats. Also included are 34 new presets for MASCHINE 2.0′s Drum Synths. Because these sounds are synthesized, they can easily be reshaped on the fly – a major advantage of synthesis-based percussion.

The presets range from drifting atmospheric pads to plucked strings and expressive mallet instrument sounds that shift and breathe like acoustic instruments. New presets for Native Instruments’ acclaimed MASSIVE synth provide subsonic basses, deep ambiences, crunchy leads, and warm synth washes. A set of organic loops featuring detuned chords, piano, mallets, and bells, plus spacious reverbs round out HALCYON SKY’s melodic content.

HALCYON SKY was exclusively designed for the new MASCHINE 2.0 software features such as Drum Synths, sidechaining and plate reverb.

The Music Producers Guild awards have announced today that they are to honour legendary producer and music-making genius Trevor Horn at this years’ awards ceremony. He will receive the Outstanding Contribution to UK music award.

Trevor Horn has spend decades at the cutting edge of music production, producing some of the worlds’ biggest tracks with leading artists. See below for the full info

Press Release:
The Music Producers Guild will honour renowned producer, musician and songwriter Trevor Horn at its 2014 Awards ceremony by presenting him with the prestigious Award for Outstanding Contribution to UK Music, sponsored by PPL.

One of the UK’s most influential producers of the last 30 years, Trevor Horn has been responsible for numerous hits for artists such as ABC, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones and Robbie Williams. The award he will receive from the MPG acknowledges those who have made a significant contribution over a long period of time to the success of the UK music recording industry.

Steve Levine, chairman of the Music Producers Guild, says: “I’m thrilled that the MPG is recognising Trevor with this award. I have known Trevor for over 30 years and have always admired his innovative production skills. He has always pioneered the use of new technology and is always happy to exchange and share his knowledge with other producers and with manufactures to help move that technical curve further forward. He is a very worth recipient of this extremely prestigious award.”

Described variously as ‘unashamedly an exhibitionist’, an ‘architect of sound’ and a producer whose work is linked by a common theme of excellence, Trevor Horn first achieved success as an artist with The Buggles, Yes and Art of Noise. When he began producing and writing songs for other artists, he quickly established a reputation for pushing the boundaries of music production. During the early 1980s he established Sarm Studios in London and also set up ZTT Records and music publishing company Perfect Songs.

Horn’s production of legendary projects such as Band Aid’s‘ Do They Know It’s Christmas?, and his work with influential musicians such as Seal, The Pet Shop Boys and Simple Minds led to him gaining the epithet of the Man Who Invented The Eighties. Since then, he has been responsible for numerous hit records and has worked with artists whose names read like a Who’s Who of the international music industry – LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill, Bryan Adams, Tina Turner, Belle & Sebastian, Texas, Kelly Rowland, Olly Murs and many more.

Horn is also known for performing on albums that he produces. Still an artist in his own right, his latest band is entitled Producers and includes various musicians/producers such as Lol Crème, Steve Lipson and singer/songwriter Chris Braide.

As sponsors of the MPG Outstanding Contribution to UK Music Award, industry organisation PPL says it is delighted that Trevor Horn has been chosen as the 2014 recipient.

Fran Nevrkla OBE, Chairman of PPL says: “I am absolutely delighted about this very special Award for Trevor Horn whom I have known for so many years. PPL is particularly proud to be the sponsor of this Award, which is bestowed on special individuals by their own community of record producers and others involved in studio production. Trevor is one of the most uniquely talented creative individuals, having achieved international fame both as a recording artist and a producer. His enormous success over so many decades is almost without parallel and it speaks for itself.

“We at PPL offer our profound thanks together with congratulations and compliments to Trevor Horn on his truly extraordinary contribution to British music which is recognised throughout the world.”

Trevor Horn will be presented with his award at the MPG’s 2014 Awards Ceremony, which takes place on February 13th at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel in London.

Now firmly established as a must-attend industry event, the MPG Awards attract music industry stars and VIPs who turn out in force to celebrate the enormous contribution that recording professionals make to the success of the UK’s music industry. In 2014, the MPG is once again collaborating with the BRITS to present the winner of its Producer of the Year Award with a BRIT Award for Best Producer.
