Propellerhead have released a new Rack Extension that provides users with the sound of the legendary Waldorf Wave synthesiser in a contemporary shell. Here’s all the official info from the ‘Props…

Official Info: Layers Wave Edition

Propellerhead Software today released Layers Wave Edition Reason Rack Extension. Layers Wave Edition offers the sound of the mighty Waldorf Wave synthesizer in a modern, easy to use sample Reason Rack Extension instrument. Four layers of unique samples from the Waldorf Wave, combined with effects, unique sequencing capabilities and comprehensive modulation, adds up to a powerful performance instrument, ready to evoke the futuristic sounds of a bygone era.

“With four separate layers of pristine audio samples featuring the sounds of the legendary Waldorf Wave synthesizer, Layers Wave Edition is designed to inspire musicians,” stated Lukas Lyrestam, Propellerhead Product Manager. “Layers Wave Edition offers the flexibility to sculpt your own sound or instantly access hundreds of patches that were designed by expert sound designers.”

Layers Wave Edition’s straightforward user interface and top-notch sample-set also invites you to experiment on your own and create presets from scratch that sound just the way you want them to. Synthetic, evolving, dreamy, soft or rock hard – Layers Wave Edition has you covered.

To learn more about Layers Wave Edition, visit www.propellerheads.se for further details.

About the Waldorf Wave
The Waldorf Wave premiered in the early 90s as the most advanced wavetable synthesizer to date. Despite its deep synthesis features, it was remarkably easy to use with its generous offering of knobs, buttons and faders to tweak just about every parameter it had to offer. A truly digital instrument, it still featured a set of analog filters that gave it a warmer sound than what is normally associated with Wavetable instruments. And people loved it. It was found in many well-funded studios of the era, since the initial price was close to $10,000.

Watch the Layers Wave Edition video here.

Pricing and Availability
Layers Wave Edition is available for immediate download via the Propellerhead store and will retail for $99 USD / €99 EUR.

Visit www.propellerheads.se for further details.

Try Roland’s VST/AU versions of the 808/909 in your DAW for free

If you wanted to try out Roland’s virtual recreations of the iconic 808 and 909 without subscribing to Roland Cloud you can now try each of them out in your DAW for free…

808 and 909

Roland tells us that anyone can take advantage of this offer, which allows users a 30-day free trial to play with the VST/AU versions. Best of all, there’s no credit card required. Here’s Roland with all the reasons why you should give it a go:

The TR-808 Software Rhythm Composer

Few instruments have influenced modern music like the TR-808. Renowned for its big, booming bass drum, the ‘808 is a force of nature that can be felt and heard. Add a robotic clap, brash cowbell and crisp cymbals and you’ve got the raw materials for musical mayhem – maybe it’s no coincidence that ‘808’ is the penal code used by the US police for ‘disturbing the peace’. Ever present, always relevant – the TR-808 is undeniably, indisputably, the biggest sound on the planet.

Introducing the TR-909 Software Rhythm Composer

While the TR-808 is all about warmth and width, the ‘909 is all about precision and power, with clattering, metallic hi-hats, pummelling tom drums and a rib-cracking kick drum that became the beating heart of house and techno. The ‘909 is a cornerstone of electronic music, an integral part of the dancefloor’s DNA. To some, it’s just a drum machine – for others, it’s the pulse of youth culture; the only sound you hear when the lights go down.

New TR-8S integration

The TR-808 and TR-909 plugins also work with the new AIRA TR-8S Rhythm Performer. It’s now possible to send patterns, variations and names from the TR-8S hardware directly to the 808/909 plug in. Or, you can create patterns on your computer and send them back to the TR-8S for performance or further production. You can even control the parameters of the 808/909 plugins, including volume, tune and decay, via the hands-on controls of the TR-8S.

Check out the Roland Cloud page for further information.

Korg has begun celebrations for the 30th anniversary of its M1 keyboard with a series of special promotions lined up to commemorate it. Here’s Korg with the full details…

m1 keyboard

In 1988 KORG released the legendary M1. Unlike any other keyboard of that time, it featured a ground-breaking combination of cutting edge synthesis, digital effects, drums and an onboard sequencer. The M1 defined a whole new product category known as the “Workstation”, which has remained to this day with products such as the industry-leading KRONOS.

Thirty years since the release of the M1, the legacy lives on with its iconic sounds still being used on many recordings. In recognition of the 30th anniversary, we have decided that 1st May will be designated as M1 day, triggering the start of our celebrations. Production of the M1 ceased in 1995 at which point it was the best-selling synthesizer of all time. Today, the heritage of the KORG M1 lives on in our software synths, iOS apps and free expansions for the KROME Workstation.

The anniversary celebrations commence on the 1st May – M1 Day, with a special sale of KORG’s software versions of M1, and will run for 30 days. The Korg Collection M1 is now available for $24.99 and the Korg iM1 for iPad is just $14.99. Other activities are also planned in the coming months acknowledging 30th years of this very special product. For further information head here.

Roland has added four new modules to their System-500 Eurorack range: the SYS-510 Synth, SYS-555 LAG/S&H, SYS-531 MIX, SYS-505 VCF…

system-500

Originally launched 3 years ago, the System-500 range was Roland’s initial bid to capitalise on the exploding modular scene. Created in collaboration with US boutique company Malekko and built in Japan, Roland have sought to rekindle the magic of the System 100m and System-700 modulars from the 70s. Here’s the full story in their own words.

With the SYSTEM-500 510 module, designing your first modular setup or integrating classic Roland sound into your existing modular rig has never been easier. Based on the vintage SYSTEM-100m’s 110 VCO, VCF, and VCA module, the SYSTEM-500 510 module brings together the best aspects of the SYSTEM-500 into a single voice module. It contains three pristine oscillator waveforms, classic Roland low pass filter with hi-pass switches, and a VCA with multiple outputs. It has inputs for external signals and modulation, and output jacks for both Eurorack and line-level audio. At 20hp and internally normalled for cable-less operation, the SYS-510 is an essential building block, whether you’re an experienced user or just diving into modular synthesis.

Inject the sound of the Roland SH-5’s revered filter section into your modular rig with the SYSTEM-500 555 module. The Roland SH-5 is one of the most sought after monosynths in history with one of the most distinguished filters of any monosynth in history. Combining a multi-mode filter with a band-pass filter, it produced a sound that has propelled it to “favourite filter ever” territory for many. It maintains its bass response with a meaty resonance growl. With switchable outputs, built-in VCAs, and CV control of cutoff, resonance, this dual filter gives you two different vintage filter characters in a flexible and compact 16hp module.

Channeling inspiration from the Roland SYSTEM-100m’s 150 and 165 modules, the 555 module is a five-in-one powerhouse that brings core utility functions to your modular setup, but with some new and interesting twists. With ring modulation, versatile sample and hold with seven waveforms and internal LPF, pink and white noise modes, LFO with internal ENV and VCA, and two CV controlled portamento circuits, your tonal shaping and modulation options are near infinite.

Inspired by the SYSTEM-100m’s 131 output module, the SYSTEM-500 531 module brings six high-quality inputs, each with level slider, pan knob, and performance-friendly mute button. It has high-fidelity sound with low noise, ensuring that your modular rig sounds its best. The six pan knobs are CV controlled and there’s even a boutique-quality stereo preamp, so you can bring in mic or line level signals–or get overdriven tones. The headphone section has an easy-to-reach, dedicated volume knob as does the multi-format output section that lets you use both 1/4″ and 1/8” cables. There’s even an LED level indicator for visual feedback.

Superbooth 2018: DSI officially announces the Sequential Prophet X

$

After getting a teasing glance (and listen!) of the Sequential Prophet X, Dave Smith Instruments has formally announced the new hybrid synth along with all its features. We’ll pass you over to them for the full story…

Dave Smith Instruments today announced the Sequential Prophet X, a new, bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo (16-voice mono) synthesizer that combines samples and synthesis. At the heart of its sound is a newly developed engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters.

Dave Smith commented: “The Prophet X is a powerful evolution of the Prophet series. Musicians have been asking for samples through real analog flters for a long time. We’ve given them not only that, but also all of the synthesis capabilites and awesome sound you’d expect from a Prophet.”

For sample content, Dave Smith turned to acclaimed sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling,” a detailed approach to sampling that aims to capture all of the nuances and idiosyncracies of a particular sound or instrument. 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann put it this way: “We’re known for going anywhere and everywhere with sounds. We embrace all sounds as music and feel that if you can capture the musical soul of a sound, you can make it into an instrument. The Prophet X gives musicians a very immediate and responsive way to access this expressiveness.”

prophet x

The 150 GB sample library in the Prophet X includes numerous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as an extensive collection of ambient and cinematic effects. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the synthesizer’s many sound-sculpting functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and other tools. The Prophet X also provides 50 gigabytes of internal storage for importing additional samples. Several sample libraries will be available from 8Dio at launch. Support for user-created sample content is planned for December, 2018.

A dual-effects engine provides multiple reverbs, two delays (standard and BBD), a chorus, flanger, phase shifter, rotating speaker, high-pass filter, and distortion. In stacked or split voice mode, you can apply two different effects to each layer. Effects parameters can be modulated through the mod matrix as can the samples themselves. A polyphonic step sequencer allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step, per layer. The Prophet X features a premium-quality, five-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, USB support, and three OLED displays.

Dave Smith summed up the new instrument: “Composers will love the Prophet X for soundtracks and synth geeks will love it for its sound mangling potential. But it’s really for everyone because it covers such a wide range of sounds. The new analog filter design we’re using is not only fantastic for synth sounds, but also does something special for the samples.” Added 8Dio co-founder Tawnia Knox: “The Prophet X has almost infinite possibilites. But more importantly, it has a soul. It’s alive. You can touch your sounds in a different way than you ever could.”

Pricing and Availability:
The Sequential Prophet X will be available in the second quarter of 2018 with a projected MAP of $3,999. For further information head here.

Spectrasonics has kicked off Superbooth with a bang as flagship soft synth Omnisphere receives a major update that now allows for the integration of hardware synthesiser…

omnisphere 2.5

Here’s Spectrasonics with all the details:

Hardware Synth Integration

The innovative new feature bridges the physical experience gap between software and hardware, allowing users intuitive control and the ability to easily create/modify Omnisphere sounds by using the familiar layout of their supported hardware synth with minimal setup. The initial release will officially support over 20 popular hardware synthesizers from Moog®, Dave Smith Instruments®, Roland®, Korg®, Behringer®, Novation®, Sequential® and more to come. The supported hardware synths cover a wide range of types and price ranges for different types of users.

On the technical side, the new Hardware Synth Integration feature in v2.5 goes far beyond the typical “MIDI Learn” approaches that most software synthesizers employ. Under the hood, Spectrasonics development team has carefully designed unique “Hardware Profiles” for each supported hardware synthesizer, to make the special features of that hardware work seamlessly with Omnisphere by translating MIDI messages from the hardware into satisfying sonic results in Omnisphere.

This new system allows Spectrasonics to enable sophisticated interactions from a single touch of a knob, including the ability for Omnisphere to automatically recall entire FX racks, assign multiple scaled parameters and even instantly create complex modulation matrix routings on-the-fly. The new development system also allows Spectrasonics to add new profiles for new hardware synths in the future. Most importantly, it’s easy for musicians to use – simply by selecting the hardware synth from the drop-down HW menu!

Expanded Synthesis Capabilities

The new version 2.5 vastly expands the synthesis capabilities of Omnisphere by doubling Omnisphere’s voice architecture to Four Layers per patch! Each patch can now utilize up to 12 envelopes, 8 LFOs and the Modulation Matrix has been doubled to 48 modulation routings. Newly designed State Variable Filters are included, which were specially created for the OB-6 hardware profile and can seamlessly blend between lowpass, notch and hipass filter modes. Over 50 New “Analog” Oscillator Wavetables are included and featured in the new hardware profiles.

New Hardware Sound Library

Omnisphere 2.5 includes a new “Hardware Library” with hundreds of new patches created by Eric Persing and the renowned Spectrasonics Sound Development team using the Hardware Synth Integration feature. Each hardware profile has a corresponding set of sounds in the Hardware Library which were specially designed using that hardware synth as an Omnisphere controller. The new sounds feature a wide range of categories and many have a distinctly ‘classic analog’ flavor! Best of all, the new sounds are available for ALL users, regardless of if they use hardware or not!

“Since the beginning of computer-based music, the biggest limitation of software synthesizers has been the lack of physical interaction. It’s hard to beat the immediacy of a physical synthesizer that you can touch! We are very excited to be able to finally eliminate that problem by utilizing the world’s finest hardware synthesizers to fully control Omnisphere.” said Eric Persing, Creative Director of Spectrasonics. “We’ve never felt that the worlds of software and hardware synths should be segregated into different ‘camps’. Our virtual instrument users can now experience the joy of the hardware synth workflow and hardware synth users can now fully expand their capabilities into the vast sonic world of Omnisphere!”

Omnisphere v2.5 features:

  • Hardware Synth Integration!
  • New Hardware Library adds hundreds of new patches for all users:
    • Over 13,000 Sounds total now included
